The commercial in question was from 1981.

In 1977 they also made TWO commercials for AJAX.  These were each 1 minute long and were more like mini-episodes as they are so well written.  On each of them, Harold wants to clean the house up because he has a 'bird' coming but Albert isn't bothered.  He'll just give it a quick run over with the Ajax...  they began a new catchphrase "Ajax 'll fix it Arold".  The commercials went on to win industry awards.

The Kenco one was, according to Wilfrid, the last time they ever saw each other.  Harry died the following year, BUT, it was NOT his last appearance as stated in the comments boxes there.

Lol thanks.  I am one of the few collectors known to actually own both of the ajax commercials.  I am also responsible for discovering several rare sketches etc... I like to think I know a thing or two but whoever you are, there is always someone who knows more!!  I'm just a huge fan.  I know there was a bit of jest in your comment but if you do ever need any Steptoe info, feel free to sk!

No, no jest intended.

I've always had a facination with those two actors, they both seem so sad.

Why sad?  You're not one of the few who believes the documentary and drama about their relationship are you?  The BBC has been forced by a court injunction to put a warning at the beginning of 'The Curse of Steptoe' which basically says they made it up.  Harry's daughter took out a successful broadcasting complaint and it was admitted that the whole thing was fabricated, as was the documentary.

The characters were very sad at time, but I dont see why the actors are seen like that.

no, i meant more along the lines that they never seemed fulfilled, Athough he did fine stuff, Harrys career could have been (for want of a better word) bigger and Wilfred had his personal problems, such as his arrest.
I suppose also it does get hard to seperate the characters from the actors. after all, the Steptoe's were both tragi-comic.

EDIT, i was just reading on your site PhilGlass that Wilfred Brambell was considered for the part of Grandad in OFAH! WOW! Just imagine if that had happened!

Well, I must admit being one of the misguided folks who believed there was indeed some grudge between the two actors.

The idea I had formed in my mind, through readings and documentaries (although neither of the two quoted in your article, Phil) was actually that Corbett hated Brambell, more than the other way around, mostly due to Wilfrid's sexual inclinations, which were described as bordering on the paedophile, a notion, most likely, simply generated by his frequent trips to the Orient, where anything is in fact possible, IF one is that way inclined, but of course I've never seen any trace of proof on the matter, just speculation.

It's very much as you say in your article, Phil, from the point of view of the press, there's little to be gained from a nice and warm relationship, while feuds sell...

However, while I must confess not being a big Steptoe fan and never having gone deeper in research on the matter earlier, I keep being surprised by the fact I've known Wilfrid Brambell all my life, without ever recognising him, which is probably the fate of most character actors...

From Disney's "Castaways", through Paul's grandpa in "A Hard Day's Night", "Casanova" and "Picasso's Adventures" I've not only seen him many times, but also quite appreciated him, every time without knowing who he was, which is rather funny, in fact the Alice B. Toklas sketch is one of the best bits in the Swedish movie, which I heartily agree is a little, obscure comedy gem, much recommended!

Gomez -

It's nice to see someone else who knows of the Picassos Aventyr performance.  He and Bernard Cribbins create a fantastic double act.

As for Harry being the one causing the problems - yes, this is how it is reported, however, we have a lot of evidence to the contrary. In 1974 it was Harry who begged his producer to let Wilfrid join him onstage for the Cinderella Pantomime, and it was Harry who set in motion the Steptoe stage show when a producer friend of his suggested it.  I don't see why he would turn down other movie roles just to work with someone he hated...  it doesn't make sense.

They were just two people who worked together.  There is no evidence of Harry being uncomfortable with Wilfrid's homosexuality.  Harry seemed frustrated that he was seen as Harold in everything else he did, but part of that was his own fault.  Those who have seen POTTER, the Arthur Low sitcom will see that in series 1 the character of Harry Tooms was played by Sydney Tafler.  Tafler plays him like a proper gangster.  In series 2 when Harry takes over the role, he intantly makes him Harold Steptoe.  Harry made the grave mistake with Steptoe of using his real voice.  Wilfrid used a different voice, allowing him to be almost unrecognisable in other roles.  Where as Harry wanted the lead roles,  Wilfrid was happy with guest appearances, on a pro rate basis often being paid more than the lead star.

As I say in the article, any evidenc epeople can provide would be welcome as I have endless amounts proving the opposite.  Alas, they can never provide it.
