Dave are showing a rerun of "have i got a bit more (election) news" and Paul Merton mentioned that in 1954 McMillan got the BBC to delay the showing of a Steptoe episode due to be shown on election night because he thought that the working class would stay in and watch the show rather than vote. Is this true?

1964 you mean, and Harold Wilson.    yes, his view was "the middle class tory voters vote in the aftternoon, the working class labour voters vote during the evening - but they will come home, have their tea then instead of going out to vote they will watch Steptoe"... so the BBC obliged and moved the episode.

MacMillan was tory - he would have happily had Steptoe left alone!

I have wondered whether Harry H. Corbetts close person friendship with, and public support of Harold Wilson helped seal the deal.

People often mistake Wilson for Macmillan.  Macmillan was tory, Wilson labour.

Harry H Corbett made no secret of his politcal views, but Wilfrid Brambell did, probably because he was an irish man living in england.  It would be nice to think he was a tory (yes I said that) just to put a little bit of fun behind the political Steptoe episdoes.  But I've heard Wilfrid was a nice man, so clearly he wasnt a tory lol

Harry even played the steptoe character in a Party Political Broadcast, something the bbc would never allow these days,

My GF's dad once arrested Wilfred Brambell i think. I'll have to double check with her when she wakes up.

Rogue, my man, if that's not an interesting piece of trivia I don't know what it is... Cheesy

Anyway, don't remember who it was, but years ago someone was comparing Margaret Thatcher to other former Tory Pms, and he said...

"... of course Macmillan lied through his teeth, too, but at least they were his own..."
