Red Dwarf will blast back onto our screens next year.
TV channel Dave is planning to revive the cult 90s sci-fi show for a full series after the success of their one-off special in 2009.

Corrie star Craig Charles as curry-loving slob Dave Lister will return, along with Chris Barrie as Rimmer and Danny John-Jules, who played Cat.
Filming will start in the autumn.
Red Dwarf: Back to Earth drew over three million viewers in 2009, one of the highest viewing figures for the digital channel.
Craig, who also appears in Coronation Street as cabbie Lloyd Mullaney, said: "It got more viewers than BBC2 and Channel 4 combined on the night, which is really good.
"So they've just commissioned another series of Red Dwarf."
The BBC Two show ran for eight series over 11 years until it was axed in 1999.
Craig added: "We're all quite like our characters - we're caricatures of ourselves.
"We've got to recapture the highlights, like series five or six," he told The Sun.
"If we can hit that mark, then brilliant. There's no point doing it if it's so-so."

With the risk of sounding like I don't actually like any british sitcoms at all (why am I even here?Huh??) Red Dwarf is one I struggle with - I have watched the occasional episode, and even laughed sometimes, but I really don't watch it unless I have to.  Craig Charles can not act, that is as much a fact as Pensioners like to eat Spam.

Chris Barrie is super talented and I much preferred him in "The Brittas Empire".  But Red Dwarf has been very successful so it must be good.  What am I not getting?Huh???

Not entirely with you this time, lads... I do like Red Dwarf, although it's never been among my faves, never collected it, in fact I doubt I've actually seen the whole lot, but I've always watched it bumping into it when it was on, and rather enjoyed it.

Guess one of the reasons is that I got to this first in book format, and got to watch it only later, with reruns, so I knew all the story lines, and the same goes for the Hitchhiker's Guide, btw, but I must admit I still like the books better, in both cases, I must also admit I never quite liked the characterisation of Lister given by Craig Charles, either, but loved the rest of the cast.

Perhaps S/F itself is not your cup of tea? I've been a huge fan of the genre since I was a kid, and quite appreciate the send-up of its many stereotypes done in these series.

What I'm perplexed about is the reprise of the series after so many years since it's done its main course... I rather liked the 2009 special but, as I said at the time, perhaps it should have stopped at that... nevertheless, I'll be giving it a chance, you never know.

You are right Gomez, its the sci-fi! the genre really does nothing for me,saying that i liked the original Star trek Tv series' & films and the first Star wars films are good.i really like the Back to the future movies too, anything else is off limits i'm afraid.
Oops! just thought, is Buffy the vampire slayer & the spin-off Angel sci-fi OR horror/fantasy? i love these shows which is odd really as i don't usually do much american tv!

I love sci-fi.... "Quantum Leap" is my favourite drama series ever, though only the last series dealt with the actual sci-fi element ona  regular basis.  Love all the sci-fi stuff except Star Wars which I can not stand... I really am a very strange person.
"Star Trek" rocks and my reason for living is to write the "Doctor Who" movie. if only they'd let me!!!!!!

I don't hate Red Dwarf, I just don#t think I "get2 it.  As for "Brittas"  series 1-5 I thought were fantastic, then they changed writers and it went down hill.

Well, not only it takes all sorts to make a world, but there's plenty of room for specific sub-tastes, so to speak, in each and every mind... Wink

Never liked the Star Wars "franchise", as constant recycling of ONE idea is called these days, I believe, either... to me it's just spaghetti-western with spaceships and light-sabres replacing horses and six-shooters, but apart from the special FX it's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" all over again... and again... and again... with prequels Wink

My personal idea of great S/F on screen is "Blade Runner", and of course "2001", although the latter feels a bit "tired" watching it again these days, perhaps... or at least it makes you feel tired... and sleepy... Wink

Not much else, I must admit, here again I much prefer to READ S/F, the visualization of it generally makes it lose some of its imaginative power, somehow, to me...

Also with TV, however, my feeling is that Brits do it better (in general AND with S/F), Dr. Who is very good and, anyone remember "Sapphire and Steel"?

But I quite liked the American series "Firefly" even though, here goes the contradiction, it's quite Star Wars-ish... you might want to check that out, Karl, if you don't know it already, it was written by Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy and Angel, and HE thinks it's the best thing he's ever done, so there might be something for you there...

I do, it used to scare the brown stuff out of me. Especially that episode with the faceless man in it.

How times have changed, eh? That mostly consisted in either David McCallum or Joanna Lumley staring fixedly in the distance for some 30 seconds and then going... "They're coming!", with atmospheric music building up... and that was it, really! Smiley

Thinking the mighty Daleks themselves derived from a pepperpot from the BBC canteen and were made on a budget of 62 quid (each) gives an idea of how far we've come in... well, it's nearly half a century, not a very short time, in fact, but still...

Guess modern kids would yawn themselves to death with "Sapphire and Steel" these days Wink

Oh, and, deary me, I almost forgot one of my favourite TV series of all time, not just S/F, and American too, "The Twilight Zone" I can still watch with almost as much enjoyment as I did in my childhood, that's one I've been collecting for decades, literally, and never tire of...

Well, guess there is a bit of nostalgia factor in all this stuff as well, but I like to think it was simply VERY well done, great writing, acting, directing, and the best they could make of limited budgets and technology, which more than made up for the lack of huge explosions in 3-D, which is all too often ALL you get these days... or maybe I'm just getting old... Wink

Thanks for the tip re:Firefly Gomez,i knew Joss Whedon wrote it but have never got round to it as, in my ignorance i thought it couldn't be as good as Buffy & Angel,i got rather obsessed with those shows to the extent that i had to get then, watch 'em all which i did last year.i found myself watching 4 or 5 40 min episodes in a night, mad or what?

Perfectly normal, to me... Smiley

I once went through the whole of "Fawlty Towers" on a rainy sunday, and found myself sad because there were only the 12 episodes, I could have watched more... Grin

And that was indeed when I'd bought the DVDs, after having seen the lot a couple of times already Smiley

As for "Firefly", it's probably not a peak of originality, to be honest, it does owe quite a bit to "Star Wars", and possibly "Star Trek" as well, but great characters and a very good cast make all the difference to me.
