What has everyone made of this?  Only one episode so far, but ep 2 is on tonight.  I was drunk so fell asleep through the boxing day viewing but watched it last night in a more sober state.  It had its moments but I feel David Jason is just too old for the part.  I also think slapstick needs a live audience.

Hi Phil,
I'll be totally honest here,i thought this was SHOCKING!  Shocked
If this is the best they can come up with for David Jason,he should retire gracefully,a silly idea,no laughs, worse "sitcom" i've seen in years.Episode 1 was awful, its been widely slated apparently.

Well anything he does now will be slated because its not OFAH.  But I didnt think the script had any flaws whatsoever, it's good lighthearted slapstick.  I just think a different actor should have done it,  DJ should stick to the drama

I watched the second episode and i'll admit, i quite enjoyed it. A bit too OTT in the blundering for my liking but still enjoyable.

Yes I thought episode 2 was pretty good.  Yes OTT but it never claimed not to be!   I actually think it will warm up in time, but it would have benefitted from a studio track.  Slapstic suits it better

Been busy for a while and missed a few new things from the start, catching up just now, and I was seriously worried about this, after reading the absolutely dreadful reviews of the first episode.

After watching the first three, I'm glad to see you guys seem to have a more realistically balanced view of it, well, most of you Smiley

I'm in two minds, myself... well, honestly, this doesn't deserve the flat-out panning it got from "official" reviewers, but at the same time it isn't very good, is it?

David Jason's not the problem to me, I said that before, don't care how old he is, I always find his performances well above reproach, but even the best interpreter can't make a dull and uninspired plot exciting, and that seems to be the case here... still, I've seen MUCH worse, indeed.

What really puzzles me, though, is that David apparently vetoed the DVD publication of a couple of his old series, notable among which was "The Secret Life of Edgar Briggs", where he played an incredibly clumsy and bumbling MI5 agent, almost pure slapstick, VERY close to the character of Guy Hubble, but with better story-lines and supporting characters... and now he does THIS?

Well, I don't entirely dislike it, there's a few chuckles to be had, but I guess he really needed the money...

Since most reviewers coupled this with the also new BBC sketch-show "The One", in order to try and kill both at the same time, a quick comment on that as well...

Missed the first ep. (Lenny Henry), purposely avoided the second (Jasper Carrot), quite enjoyed the third and final one (Griff Rhys Jones).

Nostalgia factor? Well, yes, I'll admit to that, I miss programs like "Not the Nine O'Clock News" or "Smith & Jones", I just found it very refreshing seeing a middle-aged comedian doing comedy, for a change, rather than travel documentaries...

Oh, and, speaking of which, anyone seen John Cleese's "Alimony Tour"?

Well, at least he does state quite clearly that he needed the money... Wink

Now on to catch up with Mrs. Brown's Boys and Shameless... ah, and, the new Hustle's on, too... getting a bit long in the tooth as well, I'm afraid, but I still enjoy it...

Welcome back Gomez!!
One or two things there that i watch/watched Lenny Henry on "The One" was a pleasant suprise,i had a few giggles on that,"Mrs Brown's boys" is fe****** brilliant,i like the way they laugh and just carry on with the script.
I've said my piece about "The Royal bodygaurd", thinking about it though it is more about the script than David Jason's ability, i'm suprised a man of his undoubted talent & experience even agreed to do it,after all i can't imagine he'd struggle for offers................

The only one of "The One" i caught was Jasper Carrotts (I'm REALLY glad i missed Lenny Henrys!), it was nice to see the return of the Detectives but it wasn't a good show and i just couldn't get over how frail Jasper looked.

The problem is, people compare.  DJ publically said that this show was nothing other than silly slapstick adn unless you watch it with that in mind you won't like it.  I think it's bloody refreshing for once to have a comedy that isn't pretending to be something it's not.  It's not claiming to be clever, in fact, it is going against that.  It is simple family comedy.  And about time too.  Comedy is at its all time worst at the moment, people think things are funny because internet reviews say they are.  Judge everything on its own merits.

As for why DJ did it, he said he did it because there are no comedies he can sit down with his 10yr old to watch.  Everything is either for kids or adults.  He did this on purpose to bring family audiences back together.  And I couldn't agree more.  That's why he did it.

I think it's a great show.  It's funny, nothing else.

As for "The One..." I only saw Jasper's too.  I don't think he looked "frail", he looked older than the last time we saw him.  Older and frail are not the same.  I would love another special of THE DETECTIVES.  Though the song he did at the end was not his best, mainly due to bad sound recording from the BBC.

To me, MRS BROWNS BOYS is tripe.  Pure tripe.  I never liked the original theatre shows it was based on, and the sitcom is even worse.  And I have watched 2 episodes all the way through, as well as out of context clips of other episodes.  Terrible.  To me the only thing worse on TV comedy is Sean Lock.

Oh, yeah. i'll agree that old and frail are not the same but frail was what came to mind when i saw him on the screen, especially on the Detectives skit, that suit was hanging off him. I know that he's been off our screens for a while (wasn't it that quiz show that last thing he did?) so he will look older but when i saw him on The One, i was in half a mind to google to see if he had just recovered from something!

LOL @ Mrs Browns Boys, its real marmite TV isn't it? My parents are big fans of it but my girlfriend hates it.

lol don't lie, you don't have a girlfriend!! ha ha...  joking...

I conceed the point about the suit, but that's the costume departments error, not his.

By the way, he is 67 years old!!    Probably why he looks old!!
