Is the best comedy necessarily the most universal? Hackles have been rising in Scotland recently over the seeming refusal of the BBC in London to screen three hit comedy series south of the border. The sketch series Burnistoun and Limmy's Show and the sitcom Gary: Tank Commander are all popular BBC hits above Berwick-upon-Tweed. The corporation's apparent reluctance to give them a wider profile led to accusations of prejudice – as reported in Scotland's Sunday Herald a few weeks ago – with comedy promoter Tommy Sheppard blaming "people from the Oxbridge set who are controlling our broadcasting".

No, I dont think to be successful it has to be universal - it depends how you measure success - longest running doesnt mean most successful either.  (It could in fact imply the opposite- they couldnt come up with any better ideas!!).

Regional comedies can be the best, and they should be given more freedom.

You think you're missing out!  BBCAmerica is refusing to show ANY British comedies at all -- in fact it's not showing any British dramas, either.  I'm not kidding.  A typical evening of BBCAmerica fare consists of several episodes of Top Gear, a Doctor Who rerun, an old X-Files episode, and soon, Battlestar Galactica.  I have a satellite dish.  I don't need BBCAmerica to show me old American science fiction programs.  This situation has me and other fans of British television perplexed.

LOL, it only occured to me that i have Sky and in the top numbers (970 and above i think), you can see all of the local BBC channels, so i can actually see BBC Scotland. i'll have to keep an eye open for those comedies.
