A brilliant thread!! And I neevr knew that!! Well stone me!!
Okay, here's one.. (sorry, I DO know about other things than Steptoe, I promise...)
Wilfrid Brambell was originally cast in an episode of the first series of Blackadder (1983) but was replaced by WIlliam Russell when Brambell walked out due to delays in filming his part. Tony Robinson also talks about this online, saying: "I remember Wilfrid Brambell coming in for a part and walking out of the rehearsal. He said he'd never seen such a shambolic and unprofessional bunch of performers in his entire life. And he was right."

When Billy Connolly did his first tour in Australia, after a gig in a small club, he was confronted by a bunch of local ockers (Australian yobs) who called him a "pommie pooftah". Incensed, he replied "How'd you DARE calling me English?" Unfortunately, the yobs failed to see either the humour or the difference, and beat him up all the same...

The first ever episode of "Fawlty Towers2 was so poorly received by the live studio audience that (according to John Cleese) they had to add laughter in before they broadcast it.

Apparently, the Beeb delivered a coachload of Finnish tourists who couldn't understand English to the studio that day... or was that the first episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus? So much trivia, so little memory to keep it all neatly organised... wish we could add RAM...

The week before Tony Hancock recorded "The Blood donor",he had a car accident, it affected his ability to learn his lines. If you watch the episode carefully he is reading his lines from so-called "Idiot boards".This is quite clear when he is talking to the doctor(Patrick Cargill) about a pint being an "nearly an armful".Hancock is looking over the docs shoulder to read his lines!

"Only Fools and Horses" was originally ended on the series 5 episode "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" when it ended, and was recorded, with Del moving to Australia, leaving Rodney and Albert in the flat. It ended with Rodney reading Del's goodbye note. This was because David Jason told the BBC he wished to do no more episodes.
A week before it was broadcast he changed his mind, and as the set was still up (filming had just stopped), they refilmed the ending, and had Del deciding to stay after all.
Also, the episode "Hole In One" was originally filmed with Lennard Pearce instead of Buster Merryfield, but he died before all of the episode was completed - his scenes have never been shown.

Before starting his acting career, while still living in his native South Africa, Sid James used to be a very successful ladies' hairdresser... Well, guess everybody knew that already, but it's such an unlikely idea I thought it couldn't be missing in this thread... (cackles)

Spike Milligan, Ronnie Barker and David Jason all claimed, at different times, to have been the one who had recorded the raspberries heard throughout the Two Ronnies' mini-series "The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town". Will we ever know who the real blower was?

lol Gomez... what a great gig to put on your CV.
According to patricia Routledge, Roy Clarke would refuse toa ttend the filming of "Keeping Up Appearances2 in protest against her as he didn't like the way she would improvise in practically every scene.
However, I find this a little hard as Clarke had previously written fro Ronnie Barker, and has had some big names in Summer Wine.... None of them improvised? I don't know!!

In the early '50s the variety radio show "Star Bill" was scripted by Bob Monkhouse and Denis Goodwin. One of the resident comedians in the show had taken such a dislike to their material that he'd started using the actual pages of the script as toilet paper. Eventually, the producers took the subtle hint and replaced the writers with a pair of very promising youngsters, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. The resident comedian in question was Tony Hancock, esq. It doesn't bear thinking how, exactly, the toilet paper detail was made public for all to know , but the anecdote was related by Bob Monkhouse himself in his memoirs, so there must be a fundament of truth in the story of how Hancock got to working with G&S for the first time...
