Rumours have been circulating about The Inbetweeners Movie 2 today. Here is the official position...
Published on Sep 5, 2011

An interesting, and seemingly plausible, story popped up at The Mirror today, proclaiming that, in the light of its staggering box office success, a sequel to The Inbetweeners Movie is on the way.

The story cited an “insider” as saying that a follow-up will tell a reunion story, set four years after the events of the movie. The film will be set on the eve of Neil’s wedding, and the story says that “studio bosses” have asked for the follow-up.

There’s one problem with this story, though. And that’s that it’s bollocks.

We got in touch with The Inbetweeners co-creator, co-executive producer and co-writer, Iain Morris, and he told us that he and Damon Beesley have actually taken the last few weeks off – “I’ve been mostly drunk” – and that today is their first day back in a room together.

Morris says that the supposed insider quote is neither he nor Damon Beesley, and “as we haven’t talked about anything, the idea that there’s a plot is insane”.

He also added that “we were an independent British film, so talk of ‘the studio’ is nonsense – there wasn’t one”.

Morris did add that “it’s brilliant and humbling that people like it so much”, and that “we love working with the boys, we honestly miss them, and the reaction to the film is incredible, so we’re got a lot to talk about”.

That doesn’t rule out a sequel, but as things stand, the people who would have to conceive it, plan it and write it know absolutely nothing about it.

The cast of the Inbetweeners have told Newsbeat they would consider doing a sequel to the first film.
The movie version of the TV series has made more than £44 million at the UK box office so far.
James Buckley, who plays Jay, said: "If there's a good idea then I can't see why there won't be a follow-up in some sort of way."
