Stephen Fry has abruptly shelved plans to film in Japan for a forthcoming BBC series, following an outcry over jokes made on his quiz show QI about a man who survived both of the atomic bombings.

Fry, the show's host, was due to arrive in Japan earlier this week to film Planet Word, which will explore the link between language and manga, mobile phones and other media, and explain how young Japanese are transforming their mother tongue.

The author and TV presenter, who is currently filming in Singapore, sparked controversy after describing Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as "the unluckiest man in the world" in an episode of QI broadcast in December.

Unbelievable! Sometimes I can't help wondering, wouldn't the world be a better and especially more peaceful place without journalists?

They're the ones who "spark controversy", and if there is nothing to spark, they create it...

I remember the programme well, the question was in fact whether a man who had TWO atomic bombs dropped on his head in a couple of days could be considered extremely unlucky, because he was there, or extremely lucky, because he survived both and got on to live to the ripe old age of 90 something.

Fry even pointed out how trains kept running regularly, in the circumstance, that's how the man got from Hiroshima to Nagasaki, where's the offence, to either the man or the country? It's flattering, if anything...

You can't make light of atomic bombs, they say... well, this is, once again, political correctness brought to its stupidest consequences, it's like fair-headed men complaining about Frank Spencer being offensive because he had blond hair and was stupid...

Guess it COULD happen, if "Some Mothers..." was done these days...
