If there is a problem with TV today, Robert Lindsay says, it’s in the writing, which he says is “not as good as when I first started. There aren’t many John Sullivans [the writer of Lindsay’s hit 1970s sitcom, Citizen Smith, who died in April]. And Alan Bleasdale [who wrote the 1991 series GBH, in which Lindsay starred] is not writing enough for TV.

And Robert Lindays has written....Huh??  That's like someone who can't fly a plane saying "the plane is broken" when he can't get it to take off.

To some extents he is right, but for example My Family wasn't only a piece of rubbish by the end (I liked it when it first started) because of the writing, but also because of the half arsed performances.  Why write an opera for someone who sings out of tune?

Lindasay is a good actor, but a good actor can also take a crap script and turn it to genius.

Maybe Robert had his latest effort in mind, the new comedy series "Spy", just started on Sky, where he plays the head of MI5 who hires the protagonist, a complete moron, by mistake...

Rings a bell? Yes, it's Frank Spencer meets Piglet... and the examination scene is entirely lifted from "Mr. Bean", but they would probably say it's a "hommage".

Still, it's perhaps too soon to disregard this after just the one episode, let's see how it develops, if it does.

Well, if you were to believe Sky's hype, everything they do is "exciting", "groundbreaking" and "a cult".

It's funny, really, when you think those ads can only be seen by subscribers, and what's the point in advertising a product with a customer base that already bought it? Advertisement works in mysterious ways...

But I guess that's just in order not to LOSE customers, which they've been steadily doing lately, at least here in Italy, where the programming is completely different from the UK, and the best channels are being dropped at an alarming rate, with complete and utter crap and more "duplicate" channels replacing them.

If it wasn't for international football I'd have canceled my subscription too, by now, but that's a "vice" that's hard to shake off... Smiley

Back on topic, no, I don't think this new series would be terribly good, but as I was saying it's a bit too early to pass judgement, let's wait for another couple of episodes, and I'm sure you'll be able to catch a rerun of the first one, that's the one thing they're never short of on Sky, reruns.
