Some older comedies seem to get shown again and again (Only Fools springs to mind) but some others never seem to have been repeated since their original showing (Nightingales for example), what would you like to see again?

Well, not being much of a telly user but rather a collector and "student" of comedy, what I've seen I mostly have, in some sort of recorded medium, from VHS tapes to DVDs and stuff from the... er... twilight zone... Wink

So, reruns I would dearly like to see are of stuff I've actually never seen, or only partially, so as someone might record it and then I can grab it... Wink

Off the top of my head good candidates would be "Not The Nine O'Clock News", the full series, not just compilations, or the surviving episodes of "Sykes and a..." (There's at least a dozen of those, I only got 3 or 4), Spike Milligan's Q5 (later series can be found "around" but not the first), the full "Curry and Chips", whatever survived of TW3 and David Frost's shows, the Frankie Howerd Show, Pete & Dud... oh, mostly prehistorical stuff, indeed, and few actual sitcoms in my wish-list, but those seem to be, generally, better "preserved" than sketch-shows, and what's not rerun you could at least buy, borrow or steal somewhere... Yeah, Sykes hardly ever gets repeated which is a shame as all we ever seem to get is "Only Fools" over and over again, i'd also like to see curry and chips, if only to see what the fuss is all about. Till Death also deserves a repeat.

Problem is, our interests don't seem to match those of the broadcasters, especially overtly commercial ones, but the BBC doesn't seem to make much of a difference there.

My own access to TV these days is mostly satellite, I remember when my Sky subscription was "fresh", and the channel formerly known as BBC Prime was my main source, how I enjoyed seeing reruns of "Only Fools..." and the 2nd and 4th seasons of "Blackadder", and how I got utterly bored seeing those for the 4th time in a year, and wondering what happened to the later episodes of "Only Fools..." and the 1st and 3rd seasons of "Blackadder", which for some reasons are never repeated...

That recently became "BBC Entertainment", with very little actual changes, we're given more recent stuff, that's true, "Suburban Shootout" (nice! Smiley), "Jam & Jerusalem" (boring...), the "Omid Djalili Show" (that's a funny man!), but how many times will we have to see the same stuff again and again in the foreseeable future?

Older stuff just doesn't work, at least in the mind of modern TV programmers, don't even mention black & white to them, ever, it's just unthinkable.

I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but TV itself is the last "place" we should expect anything actually interesting to happen these days, for "research" purposes it's only DVDs and/or the Twilight Zone of the Internet...

There is, or at least was, a DVD of the first season of "Sykes" (1972), with some very interesting extras, btw, the "bloopers" alone are hilarious, well worth hunting for... around...

i agree with you completely, The "Gold" channels show the same old programmes in a loop, especially Only Fools, and i now get most of my comedy fixes from DVDs nowadays, its a shame as i would never have even discovered programmes like Sykes and Bless This House if i hadn't caught a rare rerun at 5am on one of the smaller satellite channels.

I don't know if this counts as "again" but given the current state of the world's energy supply and climate change issues, a re-vamped, updated version of "The Good Life" would probably go over very well with audiences.

I can see a new Tom and Barbara trying to go all solar, organic and hempish, and being Internet-savvy, with a new and re-yuppified Margo and Jerry next door with a gas sucking Range Rover, outdoor patio heaters, all sorts of decadent leather furniture, jet trips and feasting on beef.

I think it would be very timely, and there's more materal to work with now than there was back in the late 70s! Grin

Er... "repeat" is meant as "re-run", not "re-make"...

And what we're complaining about is in fact that modern TV execs prefer to go for remakes rather than showing old original shows, which we would very much like to see again instead (OR new stuff, of course).

That said, a remake of "The Good Life" as a reality show, with Bill Oddie and Jeremy Clarkson as neighbours could turn out rather interesting Wink

I did understand the intent of the thread and I do apologize if "re-make" is a dirty word in these parts Wink (although there is also a lot of original material on tv these days that isn't so hot).

Isn't Jeremy Clarkson the "Top Gear" guy? I'd expect a he'd spend all his time savaging the performance of the neighbour's tractor or something.

No need to apologise, we're all just expressing opinions.
There is in fact, however, a basic suspicion we seem to share around here about the motives for remakes being mainly sparing scripting money AND lack of new ideas...

Quite, but was it ever any different? We remember the great shows of the past, but there were dull ones all the time as well. If more new original shows are produced, the chances of getting one or two really good ones increase (if only statistically Wink)

That's him alright, and I must admit "Top Gear" is my own very guilty pleasure... Grin
