Been in two minds about the Carry On movies for quite some time...

Haven't seen them ALL yet, just reached the late 60's, and from what I understand it's a landslide of decreasing quality after that...

Problem is, I never thought even previous ones were much to write home about, except for actors' performances!

Sid James is the "engine" of all the Carry On movies if you ask me, as good as all the other regulars are, Kenneths Williams and Connors, Charlie Hawtrey, Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims, all monuments in BritCom (as British Comedy), but it's Sid's rogue characters that bring everything together, same as he was the main reason for Tony Hancock's own success, still if you ask me, which you didn't, so fair enough... Grin

Sid James was "only" a character actor, alright, couldn't compare in versatility and sheer technical ability with most of his greatest contemporaries, from the marvellous Alastair Sim to his "heirs" Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, through some younger (sigh!) folks like Ronnie Barker and David Jason...

But Sid was unique, he could make everything liven up as soon as he appeared on screen or stage... and was one of the few thespians who actually *died* on stage, literally, same as another old-timer, Tommy Cooper.

Cheers!

Well, in two minds I might have been, but when Amazon (UK) offered me a DVD box-set with 30 "Carry On..." movies plus a few extras for little more than 50 quid plus shipping, a quick and happy meeting of those minds was just in order... Wink

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Carry-Ultimate-Collection-Sid-James/dp/B001CWLFJ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1246570122&sr=1-1

(P.S., it's already gone up a few quid since last week, you'd better hurry Cheesy)

No worries then, "Columbus" is missing from this collection as well, one of the very few cases, I believe, where even the maddest completist (which I tend to be, in truth Wink) won't feel like complaining much... Grin

I'd rather complain, instead, about the Carry On TV series, which some sources report as being entirely included in this collection as extras... well, it's NOT! Quite a few episodes, yes, which is better than nothing, but not complete, here we go again... Wink

Still, mustn't grumble, at this price, but we'll have to come to terms with the fact that no publisher, ever, will give us a really COMPLETE anything, ever, or how would they deal with future, completestest, ultimatestest (but not entirely complete, and nowhere near ultimate, really), releases? Grin

LOL, reminds me of the Red Dwarf box set i brought just before i heard of the new episodes.
Or the dvd of the remaining Likely Lads episodes that had one found episode missing but was included in the Likely Lads/Whatever happened to ... set.

Having gone through the (almost) whole lot now, I stand (partially) corrected about a previous grumble, the "Carry On Laughing" regular TV series is in fact entirely included, although in a rather random fashion, one episode among the extras in each DVD, no chronological order was thought necessary, but it's the same with the movies Smiley

Still verified missing, though, beside Columbus, are the very nice "Carry On Christmas" TV specials, so my griping wasn't entirely unfair Wink

Those are, however, available on a DVD set of their own, which is reason enough, to me, for asking WHY on earth they wouldn't be included in something that has the gall to call itself "Ultimate Collection"...

Ah, well, once again, I have to remind myself, mustn't grumble at this price, but this is special sales, the box-set was once sold at full price, and early buyers DO have reasons to complain, methinks.
