They are showing the Ronnie Corbett sitcom "Sorry!" on UK Gold late at night, its a strange one, i don't remember it being so creepy when watching it first time around.  Ronnie Corbett's character has a real creepyness about him, its not difficult to imagine him being a serial killer or a sex offender or something!

Yeah his character is really a creepy one. I used to have nightmares that my life would turn out like his when I was younger. Corbett is a good actor tho, I always smile when I see newer videos of him.

Did you see his coke-snorting turn in "Extras"? Cheesy

Joining the discussion rather late, but for some reason this show remained on the bottom of my "to do" list for quite some time.

Got to watch the first series a few months ago and, deary me, was I disappointed, indeed, don't think I'll go any further...

I've always loved Wee Ronnie's chair monologues, to the point of watching the rather terrible Ben Elton Show just for Ronnie's guesting with the reprise of those, and always thought he was brilliant paired with Big Ron, this is in fact the first of his "solo" endeavours I get to see, and I can only hope he did better things than this on his own...

Don't know if I find his character "creepy", but more than a serial killer or sexual offender I find myself actually HOPING he would turn into a matricide, and the disappointment comes from the fact that he doesn't...  Wink

Still, always looking for a silver lining, this show made me promise to myself that I would never again complain with me mum about her being a bit too overbearing, at times... Grin

I haven't seen this one and can't seem to find any episodes to watch. Still, it doesn't sound as if I am missing much  Wink

3 main ingredients of sitcoms are:

1 - Comedy of misunderstanding
2 - Comedy of coincidence
3 - Comedy of excess

The result is a matter of balance, I believe, the first case is the basis of most farces, and you know it's not working when you feel compelled to cry "why don't you ask the ONE, very obvious and reasonable question which would solve the misunderstanding?"

And yet, in bad farces, no one of a dozen characters ever does...

Second case, there could be just too much coincidence, that's what the recently mentioned "Chance in a Million" deals with, Tom Chance KNOWS he was born under an unlucky star and is prepared to deal with it and make the best of an unbelievably unlucky life, which makes the lot somehow believable in its surreality... Frank Spencer (Some Mothers...) apparently doesn't realise he's both clumsy and unlucky, which makes him irritating rather than funny in the long run...

This here is the third case, the so-called "suspension of disbelief" can only go so far, anyone in a sane state of mind would move out, in Wee Ronnie's situation, if they couldn't afford a flat of their own (which he does), they'd rather go live under a bridge than keep sharing with such a mother, and yet he doesn't... is he a downright masochist? Plain stupid? Whatever it is, pretty soon we find it, again, annoying rather than funny...

If it was a matter of either misunderstanding or unlucky coincidence that keeps Ronnie at home with his bloody-minded mother, it would be a lot more acceptable, but he doesn't even try...
