Been wondering about this for months, indeed... and I'm still perplexed, if there's a decade I DON'T consider especially good for British comedy, that's indeed the '70s... Monty Python happened mostly in the '70s, alright, but they were very much a '60s thing still, while the best the decade ever produced, "Fawlty Towers", was very much an eye-opener for the forthcoming and newly creative '80s, funny how the likes of Margaret Thatcher could actually leave some creative work behind them... despite their best efforts...

i agree but maybe its because im a 70s child I am with Delboy. Seeing the odd repeats of classic 70's comedy, bring the memories flooding back.

Mind you, lately I've been watching "Bless This House", "Some Mothers..." and "Sykes", for instance... Guess you're all right about "imprinting", but I still maintain there are jewels in every decade and inbetween them, if you look hard enough

The 70's was indeed a great decade for classic comedy,we had Dads Army, Steptoe & Son ('til 74),then along came more gems-Porridge,Going straight,Open all hours, the Good life(currently re-released),Fawlty towers.I could reel off a load more but these are some of my favourites. Ronnie Barker was in three of the above mentioned, What a brilliant Comedy star he was..............

Ray Galton and Alan SImpson once summed it up in an email exchange I had with them... No, it wasn't the golden age... they pointed out that there was as much junk made then as there is now, only we dont see the rubbish so we think everything from the 70s was perfect. In fact, the archives are full of 70s sitcoms that were shelved after just a few episodes, hundreds of shows that were quite simply junk.
But there were also many gems too, and because we only see the great stuff, for obvious reasons, we think that only great comedies were made.
I agree that there are jewels in every decade. There is rubbish in every decade too!!

I dunno, yeah there were some duffers but how many sitcoms from today will be seen as classics 20 years later? My Family? Green Green Grass? Since You Were Gone? I just don't see it myself.

I agree with your list, but I could list many 70s ones which were much worse!!
As long as this era isn't measured by The Office!! That's the biggest stinker of them all!!!!
