I'm a big fan of both these shows but which was the best? What about the Porridge sequel Going straight? from what i can recall it wasn't very popular, but i thought it was very good, the first episode where Fletch was travelling home from after being released and he bumps into Mr Mackay is a classic!

Why choose, indeed, since we can enjoy both? Comparisons are difficult, except for the fact that both series are extremely good, but they're so different... Porridge is certainly "deeper" in scope and characters' portrayal, and in that sense I consider Going Straight as integral part of the series, not "just" a sequel, a necessary "closure", if you want, to sum up the life story of Norman Stanley Fletcher, but Open All Hours is one of the best "pure", lighthearted, laugh-a-minute comedies ever made, and there's certainly room for both "styles" in my book. And there's a special place for Ronnie Barker in my heart, he was one of the Giants in the field, both as a performer and a writer, even though he hasn't written either of the series in question, but how good can you be to give such wonderful, detailed performances of characters as different as Arkwright and Fletcher? You can hardly believe it's the same actor... Put him together with folks like David Jason, Richard Beckinsale and Wee Ronnie Corbett and all you have to do is pick yourself up from the floor, as soon as you've caught your breath... No, I don't want to choose, I just keep watching both time and time again "G-G-G-Ga-Gah-Granville... fetch your cloth!"

I like both too, but I like "Porridge" better as it occasionally stumbles in to a more dramatic prose. The pilot episode is much darker still and RB seems to play Fletch with a much darker side (when he is trying to flee the house, there is a moment where I feel he is almost about to hit Barraclough over the head something the loveable Fletch would never actually do - without making it look like an accident anyway lol).
Although I remember the hilarious moment in OAH when Arkwright is doing his closing monologue and stutters. "Oh bugger! I'm stuttering in my thoughts now!".
"Going Straight" I don't know too well, and I recall hearing it wasn't popular with the viewers, but it did go on to win a couple of Emmy's didn't it? Although a nice little connection with this was of course the appearance of Nicholas Lyndhurst, meaning both OFAH stars had experienced working alongside the uber-talented Mr. Ronald Barker.

Nick Lyndhurst was 15 or 16 at the time, I guess, and his part as Fletch's son was mostly a dress rehearsal for the character of a plonker, for future use... When Big Ron received his special career BAFTA award in 2004, it was given to him by Ronnie Corbett and David Jason, and the following exchange occurred... Corbett: Mind you, don't use detergents on this... Barker: No, I won't... Jason: I take mine in the shower Barker: What, ALL of them?

Hey guys, I found personally Porridge to be the better of the two sitcoms but I must admit I didn't watch as much Open All Hours as I could have.
And I must agree with PhilGlass in the regards that Porridge almost probes into a darker area than we should, especially as he does cheat Barrowclough a lot XD
I love them both I think though, Ronnie Barker is a legend in his own.
