I got the boxset of George & the dragon from santa, what great show it is,i never thought it would be so funny, watched 4 episodes on the trot last night.Nice to see Keith Marsh as the colonel's gardener and the great Sid James of course as George.Peggy Mount certainly is a dragon!! John Le Mesurier is perfect as the colonel, gret comedy i can thoroughly recommend this one!

Nice, thats a series i'll have to look out for. I got the James Bond boxset so now i'm going to plan for a Alan Partridge style James Bond marathon in the near future!

Karl,  I'll have to look out for that one too...

Rogue - do you class "Never say never again" as a Bond film?  Experts insist that it is officially not, as it was made unofficially by a rival company and released at the exact same time as the current Roger Moore one.  That and it's a direct remake of "Thunderball".

Personally I couldn't give a flying do-da either way, but it's a great film to wind up Bond fans with!!

Personally, i would class it as a James Bond film especially as the rights to that film are now owned by the company that owns all the others too. It's not included in the box set though Sad

I've watched a few more episodes of George & the dragon and in my opinion its in the "classic" category, well worth getting!
its widely available from the usual outlets.....i won't comment on James Bond as,i can't stand it i'm afraid Lips Sealed

Well, opinions on James Bond vary wildly... to me, it starts and ends with Sean Connery, so "Never say never again" fits the bill nicely Smiley

And it had Rowan Atkinson in it... Smiley

Bond: "Got to get rid of some free radicals..."
Moneypenny: "Oh, do be careful, James..."

Cheesy

Back on topic, I rather like "George and the Dragon", too, still think it wasn't the best Sid James in it, he seemed to be going through the motions a bit, but I just love the cast as a whole, especially John Le Mesurier, one of my favourite character actors ever.

Just finished reading his biography, "Do You Think That's Wise?", btw... poor John, all he ever wanted was a quiet life of moderate excess, and women made it a misery... what a bad luck.

Quite like Keith Marsh, too, been seeing him lately in "Love Thy Neighbours" as well, and, btw, I still have the impression that Jeremy Clarkson manages to be more offensive in a single Top Gear show than this series has ever been through its whole run...

And Peggy Mount is... well, Peggy Mount Wink

My son and i had a "Sid James" night last night and we experienced a touch of "deja vous" firstly we watched episodes of "Bless this house" followed by "George & the dragon".In an episode of "George & the dragon"-"Sunday morning" series 2,exactly the same words were uttered (at times) by Sid & Peggy Mount as were later said by Sid & Diana Coupland in Bless this house episode-"Charity begins at home" Series 1,odd this as Vince Powell & Harry Driver first wrote "George & the dragon" and then later wrote some episodes of "Bless this house" but not this particular one,the writers were-David Cumming & Derek Collyer
It was one of those moments when the two of us recognised the words and looked at each other amazed!!

Well, where Vince Powell is involved, recycling is never too far away... he might not have written the whole of the "Bless This House" episode in question, but maybe some of his ideas were used there...

There's one plot he re-used at least three times, almost word by word, and that's only to the best of my own knowledge, first in BTH, the season 2 episode "A Rolls By Any Other Name", then in "A Sharp Intake of Breath" (S04 E01, "Wheels"), with David Jason, and then in "Mind Your Language", don't remember the specific episode.

That's a writer who clearly trusted the viewing public with having a very short memory...

P.S. I just checked those episodes you quote from G&D and BTH... the beginnings are indeed absolutely identical, not just a few words, the pillows in bed gag, the biblical references (they begat in those days)... can't be a coincidence, can it?

In those days it didn't really matter - people didn't have videos or dvd's, so you wouldn#t watch one episode then the other.  "Steptoe and Son" had a lot of recycling, but it was always presented slightly differently, so it worked.  I don't hjave too much of a problem with it, as long as it is funny.
